| Yseult is the last in a long line of de Cairs, having come into the lordship upon the death of her cousin, Gilbert de Cair. His was a somewhat abnormal branch of the family, while Yseult's father, grandfather, and deeper ancestry tended towards a similar theme of introversion and mystery.
Her own father, Chancel de Cair, and Gilbert's father, having quarrelled in their youths, the former was banished to a much older familial manor, long since fallen into a state of decay and ruin. There he brought his bride, sired his only legitimate child, and raised her, until his subsequent madness and Gilbert de Cair's death returned Yseult to the more well-appointed seat of the Lordship in Northern Spirit's Settling shortly before her 16th birthday.
Having, until that point, lived a desultory life, few in the Lordship's council knew what to do with the young girl. Her father being mad, her mother long dead, and no one else in the family alive, charge of the young lady's education was referred to the former Lord's steward.
