History
As the first daughter of her family, Yilana and her mother were thick as thieves. However, when her two younger sisters came to be, Yilana found an uncomfortable spot in the family. Neither the baby, nor the middle, nor the eldest child, Yilana was constantly ignored by her father and thusly always acted out to gain his attention. She was loud, sassy and wild and would often find herself reprimanded by her father and told to be a better role model for her younger sisters.
Despite the obvious strain between father and daughter, Yilana's mother was always there for her and became her closest confidant. She encouraged Yilana to reach for her dreams, and thus was the acting force behind Yilana's first experiences in medicine. Often, she would find dying birds and various other small animals and attempt to "heal" them, cooking odd concoctions in her bedroom and passing it off as medicine. More often than not, the animals were poisoned and promptly died, however with the strong support of her mother, Yilana never gave up hope. She would spend many nights toiling over different mixtures of herbs, as well as learning various other healing techniques, and eventually became quite adept in the art.
At the age of twelve, Yilana begged her father to send her to the Healing University. She always felt it was her mother's strong influence that eventually led her father to agree to send her there. She was a dutiful student, putting away all her rambunctious desires to concentrate on her learning, and excelled in many of her classes the first year. However, by the time she was thirteen, tragedy struck the family. Yilana's mother had grown deathly ill and died shortly after. Yilana was never told about her mother's illness and was instead learned of her mother's fate a few days after, when she was sent for to attend the funeral. She has always blamed herself for her mother's death, thinking that if she had only been told about the illness, she might have been able to help.
Yilana was haunted by her mother's untimely death and when she returned to school, she fell behind all the other students. She became quiet and reserved and barely ever smiled. It took her four more years to complete her lessons. After she was released from the University to take on an apprenticeship, her brother, Pyrphoros, sent for her and took her to Gateway.
Around November of 505, Yilana came into ownership of the Primal Essence Perfumery. Little was done to the shop however, as almost immediately after purchase her father became deathly ill. She returned to Pyria in December to take care of her younger sisters. By June of 506, however, the official word was that Yilana left Gateway to pursue her education. Where she went and why were private matters known only to her family, and she was seen only once upon Gateway between 506 and 507, and that was only to present herself at the funeral of her brother, Pyrphoros.
Personality
Sendais are nothing if not known for their odd, quirky behavior and Yilana is no exception. With her fond affection for rats, she is perhaps the strangest (still living) Sendai. After all, not many are known to keep the company of vermin and Yilana is rarely seen without one close by.
Oftentimes, she is fairly witty and charming, although she has a distinct hatred for crowds. She is comically forgetful and clumsy, and has a short attention span when something does not immediately interest her. She also has a fond affection for rats, and these creatures are with whom she spends most
Trivia
- As she is quite forgetful, Yilana can be seen more often than not carrying a small journal in which she keeps all her notes. It includes a compendium on herbs and potions, as well as the names of the people she has met.
- Yilana experiments on mice, often giving them herbs and potions just to see what effect they have. She also has two pet mice she cares deeply for - Phoebe and Phillip - and she does not experiment on them nearly as much as the other mice she finds.
- Yilana has a soft spot for hurt and sick animals, which is odd considering she normally experiments on mice and often watches them die.
- She was never taught to swim, which caused her to be the brunt of many jokes as a child.
