Ready for the Storm, Rich Mullins Faith
|
|
The waves crash in the tide rolls out
It's an angry sea but there is no doubt
That the lighthouse will keep shining out
To warn a lonely sailor
And the lightning strikes and the wind cuts cold
Through the sailor's bones through the sailor's soul
Til there's nothing left that he can hold
Except a rolling ocean
Oh I am ready for the storm
Yes sir ready
I am ready for the storm
I'm ready for the storm

I am the lightning

Waiting For The Miracle, Leonard Cohen Chastity
|
|
Baby, I've been waiting,
I've been waiting night and day.
I didn't see the time,
I waited half my life away.
There were lots of invitations
and I know you sent me some,
but I was waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.
I know you really loved me.
but, you see, my hands were tied.
I know it must have hurt you,
it must have hurt your pride
to have to stand beneath my window
with your bugle and your drum,
and me I'm up there waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.
Ah I don't believe you'd like it,
You wouldn't like it here.
There ain't no entertainment
and the judgements are severe.
The Maestro says it's Mozart
but it sounds like bubble gum
when you're waiting
for the miracle, for the miracle to come.

We are building a religion
We are making a brand
We're the only ones to turn to
When your castles turn to sand
...
There's no need to ask directions
If you ever lose your mind
We're behind you
We're behind you
And let us please remind you
We can send a car to find you
If you ever lose your way

Interchanging mind control
Come let the, revolution takes its toll
If you could, flick the switch and open your third eye
You'd see that, we should never be afraid to die
(So come on)
Rise up and take the power back
It's time the, fat cats had a heart attack
You know that, their time's coming to an end
We have to, unify and watch our flag ascend
(So come on)
They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious
So come on

Living on a Thin Line, The Kinks Fortitude
|
|
All the stories have been told
Of kings and days of old,
But there's no England now.
All the wars that were won and lost
Somehow don't seem to matter very much anymore.
All the lies we were told,
All the lies of the people running round,
Their castles have burned.
Now I see change,
But inside we're the same as we ever were.
Now another century nearly gone,
What are we gonna leave for the young?
What we couldn't do, what we wouldn't do,
It's a crime, but does it matter?
Does it matter much, does it matter much to you?
Does it ever really matter?
Yes, it really, really matters.

Seize the Day, Newsies Hope
|
|
Now is the time to seize the day.
Stare down the odds and seize the day.
Minute by minute
That’s how you win it.
We will find our way,
But let us seize the day.
Courage cannot erase our fear.
Courage is when we face our fear.
Tell those with power,
Safe in their tower,
We will not obey.
We hold the brave battalion that stands side by side,
Too few in number and too proud to hide.
Then say to the others who did not follow through,
"You’re still our brothers, and we will fight for you."
Now is the time to seize the day.
Stare down the odds and seize the day.
Once we’ve begun,
if we stand as one
Someday becomes somehow.
And the prayer becomes a vow.
And the fight starts right damn now.
Now is the time to sieze the day
Answer the call and don’t delay
Wrongs will be righted
If we're united
Let us seize the day
Now let ‘em hear it loud and clear.
Like it or not we’re drawin’ near.
Proud and defiant we'll slay the giant.
Judgment day is here.

| History
|
How does a common-born orphan raised on the largesse of his noble kin ever become First Minister of Gateway? It's a convoluted tale, to say the least. Like any story, if you want to understand the current chapter, look to the past.
| Origins
|
His father died before he was even born, and as far as Tiege knew, his mother left him utterly to devote herself to a monastic life of seclusion and faith. Thus began the life of Tiege Soranus , an orphan taken into the household of his noble uncle, Galen Soranus.
Perhaps it was merely ill luck, but in his youth Tiege lived with many of the faith giving him doubtful looks, judging him for some unknown crime. He grew up very obsessed with the notion of justice and with proving himself. Galen was gracious to see that he received all of the tutelage of any of his own children, and Tiege took to it with a fierce devotion. It was ever his desire to serve his family and his goddess.
At thirteen he began an apprenticeship to an Advocate of the law, again arranged by Baron Soranus. He worked diligently to learn the art, grew skilled at the rhetoric, and took care of the massive amounts of paperwork that any apprentice is assigned to deal with. It was his passion and obsession. When his cousin and new Baron of Ethos, Athar, came to court at Gateway, Tiege came along but frequently returned to Draught for his apprenticeship.
|
| Small Fish, Big Pond
|
Tiege's world expanded when he came to Gateway, although there were a number of trials he faced when trying to live by the fierce tenets of the faith of a Dragon Purist in the midst of the very secular city of Crossroads. One incident with stowing away on a navy ship was the first of many journeys outside of the Barrier and birthed in him a love of exploration and the sea, but his heart was always very much with helping the poor and common of the city. He could (and still can) often be found in the slums of the city providing food, medicine, or whatever else was needed.
A relationship with a female rumored to be a vampire, Zipporah, seemed to derail some of the course of his life. The tangled web around her death-- purportedly stabbed by Baron Athar while in the middle of an intimate act, but something the Baron was never actually tried for (is it illegal to kill something already dead?)-- left Tiege a different person. Always serious and driven before, it seemed to refine the steel of his nature and the resolution of his being.
Somewhere in the mix he resigned his advocate apprenticeship, and took a position as a chamberlain to Princess Eleanor Caprios and Duke Dorian Claremont. He served Her Highness when she was administrator of the university on Gateway, and spent a great deal of time there. Another messy incident surfaced around Isolde Lieberman, the two never quite seeming friends, but somehow seeming linked.
In September 506, he entered the priesthood and became an Acolyte of Providence.
|
| Left Behind
|
In January 507, Tiege was among the rest of the Soranus family who were kidnapped and then exiled in Aquilarco by Parsifal Valens as part of a division among the leadership in the faith. While the rest of the family returned, he remained behind, hostage among pirates so that his noble cousins could have freedom. They were supposed to come back with coin to pay for Tiege's release.
In April of that year, Leon came with a group to retrieve Tiege, but it went wrong, and he was killed in the encounter. Tiege's body was returned to Gateway and sealed in the crypts of Ethos with those of his ancestors.
Usually, the story would end here.
|
| Only Mostly Dead
|
Two years after his (reported?) death, Tiege appeared in the temple in a flash of light. His last memory was falling unconscious from pirate's poison while a prisoner upon an island in Aquilarco.
There was quite a bit of stir around the reappearance of the youth, the word miracle whispered among the people, but most of that seems to have rolled off of Tiege's back like water. At least, as far as public appearance is concerned. He served at the Temple of Providence on Gateway and continued as if the whole thing had never happened, blazing a path in pursuing and defending Right.

| Recent Events
|
Tiege continued as a very vocal protector of citizens and challenger of any threat to them, while in the priesthood. He wasn't particularly silent about his view that the government needed change and citizens needed a wider voice. However, when the knights were slaughtered and a Tyrean man was put in control of the realm, he made his peace with some of the people he had been agitating against, previously.
The most notable in the list of people Tiege came to terms with was the Duke of Guardian, and he worked rather closely with Aaric Barca during this time. Their tenuous association grew into a measure of trust and stability such that, when Aaric took the position of Dux Bellorum to run the realm, he named Tiege as his second and bestowed the title of Praetor upon him.
The fire of war passed, Gateway proved its freedom, and when the new Imperial Council was put into place to rule Gateway, Tiege was placed at its head as the First Minister.
Bizarre.

|
| Personality
|
Ask around, and it's easy to find out that Tiege is caring and compassionate, but fierce in the defense of the common citizen, and has been known to go toe to toe with just about anyone over doing what's right. He has also been noted to blaze a path directly into trouble without regard for personal safety.
Tiege is very interested in other nations and travels quite a bit, both inside the empire and externally. He's devoted to a number of scholarly pursuits and loves the chance to debate.

| Relationships
|
| Family
|
Athar Soranus, Cousin, Baron Ethos - Deceased
Tiege was raised within the Soranus household, and Athar was the man he always looked up to and admired. He served Athar as a representative of the barony to both Guardian and Mists during troubled times, and was unwavering in his support of the man.
|
Ravelle Soranus, Cousin, Lady Baronet Ethos, Deceased
Tiege loved Ravelle fiercely, and often had debates about the faith with her. She was often the only one who would understand some of his stances, and he her. He mourns her deeply and considers her one of his key and foundational inspirations in life.
|
Helena Pasternak, Cousin, Imperial Chamberlain
The steady calm of Helena was always a balm to Tiege's soul, and his respect for her was high. As with Athar and Ravelle, she has been like a sibling to him, and his relationship for her is probably the closest of any living soul.
|
Karyleine Codex, Cousin, Lady Codex
In his younger days, Tiege had some very tender emotions for the Soranus cousin closest to his age, but their relative stations were always a barrier. Their relationship became more formal for a while, but warmed again as time passed. He admires her determination and passion, and some of their common fascination with research, history, and adventure.
|
Ysora Kilgannon, Cousin, Baroness Crucible
Ysora drives Tiege a little batty, but he still loves her.
|
Leon Maritus, Cousin
The number of troublesome ventures into which Tiege has dragged Leon is near legendary, and neither time nor tide nor death nor anything else seems to get in the way of Tiege's unquestioning trust of Leon. BFF, man. BFF.
|
Portia Maritus, Cousin, Lady of Gwencalon
Tiege will long remember the childhood incident where Portia and Leon got him into trouble. Friendship only came later in life.
|
Joshua Dhaval, Cousin, Lord Meritas
The third of the Tiege/Leon/Joshua trio of close friends.
|
Mihovil Pasternak, Cousin by marriage, Protector of the Imperial Seat
To say that Mihovil and Tiege don't get along might be an understatement, but really, it's because Mihovil is a jerk, not because of anything Tiege has done to deserve it. Just ask Tiege. Surely his opinion is trustworthy?
|
Parsifal Soranus, Cousin by marriage, Baron Regent of Ethos
Sure they met because Parsifal had Tiege knocked out, kidnapped, and murdered by pirates. Their relationship improved after that, though.
|
Jaylene Codex, Cousin, but more like Niece really
There are other young girls in the world, but none as pretty as Jaylene Codex. That's Tiege's take on her.
|
Tiege Codex, Cousin, but more like Nephew really
A boy who was named after him during that time Tiege was dead. It sounds almost like a joke, but how could Tiege not adore the boy named after him?
|
Tikhon Pasternak, Cousin, but more like Nephew really
No matter what anyone says, Tiege will always secretly believe that the boy is at least partly named after him!
|
| Friends
|
Aaric Barca, Duke of Guardian
Tiege might have had some issues with Aaric Barca along the way, notably for the man's treatment of his beloved cousin Leon, but during the occupation a common goal worked its way toward trust, respect, and a surprisingly treasured friendship.
|
Addison Fortescue, Paisian Something, Now
When Tiege first met Addison, the two stowed away together on one of Admiral Hasdrbual's ships. A working voyage for him, once they were found.
|
Ayleth Cildouney, Bardess
The faithful bard has long been someone Tiege considers a friend. He's a bit protective of her, and fond of her dog, Lyric.
|
Briony Marchora, Baroness of Burgundy Terrace
Tiege's friendship with Briony goes back a long way, to when she placed the hedge of her title around him as protection once. Later he went to her in order to start a branch of the Radiant Light on Green Fields.
|
Card, Well, he's..Card
It isn't that Tiege has never had conflicts with the man who has walked such dark paths, but Tiege has come to rely upon and value his association with Card, and to get to a first-name basis and friendship beyond formality.
|
Charlotte Kilgannon, Imperial Healer
Tiege got to know Charlotte through the Radiant Light clinic. She's been a good friend to him, and taught him a lot about healing and life.
|
Chloe Barca, Lady of Guardian
He couldn't name when he and Chloe started becoming friends, but the two seem to click very well and can oft be found lingering together at events.
|
Ellie Clapton, Citizen and Odd Relation
She was adopted by Ravelle, and Tiege always felt an odd kinship with her. The two talk at odd intervals, often at Food for Thought in the University.
|
Elphin Cildouney, Merchant of Tyr
Despite the fact that Elphin is a controversial figure, Tiege has found a friendship and respect for the man since he married the man and Ayleth.
|
Gruoch of House Barca, Duchess of Guardian
Her passion for integrity and good and her viewpoint about individual responsibility and honor has made Gruoch one of the few people outside of family with who Tiege can comfortably discuss faith, idealism, and dreams without feeling like he looks like a goober.
|
Khalani Claremont, Duchess of Draught
Tiege has long ago established himself as really being a citizen of the empire at large, but he certainly considers Khalani to be a model Draughtian, drugs and all. Their conversations are always warm and fun, except for when she's angry at him.
|
Kyler Guybrush, Knight, Mage
Anyone who knows anything about Tiege will know he had a number of clashes with the knighthood and problems with that organization in its prime, so why he considers Kyler a friend is oft a mystery. It might be a mystery even he doesn't understand.
|
Linette Barca, Baroness of Caerdach
He first met Linette when she and Leon were quarreling, and had some rocky road with her due to her own interpretations of the faith before she married Leon. Their friendship bloomed over time due to a hatred of darkness and a love of good, though, and even after Leon and she broke up, she still numbers among his dearest friends.
|
Oksana Zakov, Alchemist
Oksana was remanded to the Soranus family as their ward after her mother was killed (?) and her father on the run due to unethical experiments. She and Tiege struck up a friendship despite their dissimilarities. She is someone he often goes to in order to get bracing wisdom.
|
Roxana Arcos, Gypsy
The jingling, carefree gypsy woman almost always brings a smile to Tiege's features, and certainly they share a passion for caring for the people of Gateway.
|
Sage Coibran, Guildmistress
Tiege had long had an admiration for Sage's plain-spoken devotion to the people. It seems only natural that it would blossom to friendship when they worked together more.
|
Solphin Acaran, Trouble with a capital T
It seems like they've been friends forever, sharing letters and odd moments and support and insight. Solphin is sometimes a guiding star and sometimes the fire under his backside.
|
Tanwen ap Bedwyr, Admiral
It's a peculiar friendship, to be certain, as she seems prone to growling at, yelling at, or harassing Tiege, and yet he considers Tanwen one of the people he is certain would get his back in any situation. She may deck him later, but sometimes friends do that.
|
Wynne Rosewood, Healer
The blunt-spoken and sometimes abrasive healer may have left the Radiant Light clinic, but Tiege has found a camaraderie with her, and shared concern for the people. It's a solid friendship. Plus, she gets him the special tea.
