Solomon Karaganinas, Marquis of Mists

The next in line to the throne of the duchy of Mists, Solomon is the son of the former Mistian duke and famed summoner, Lazarus Karaganinas and his then fiancée, Meredith Ravensford. Through his late mother, he is descended from the ruling family of Moonshadow barony. A quiet and inquisitive boy, his uncle claims he has the heart of an artist.

A struggle for custody began in the summer of 507, when Drake Ravensford successfully petitioned the High Council of the Academy of Imperius for custody of his nephew. Thus far any transition appears to be a peaceful matter for the young marquis, though bitterly contested by his former and present guardians. Solomon remains under the watch his uncle and under the protection of Stahlgrim, a mage and member of the Order of the Ready Arm.

Only months after gaining custody of Solomon, Drake again vanished from society leaving the question of who was to care for the young Marquis up in the air. After petitioning the High Council, Solomon was then placed in Lady Laraine Karaganinas's care where he remains to this day.

History

Meredith Ravensford had been set to wed Duke Lazarus of Mists, and was with child by him when the Duke took gravely ill. Unable to serve in the capacity required of him, Lazarus abdicated his title and its responsibilities to become Lord of Mists along with his sister, Laraine. Meredith, still pregnant, went on to marry Raziel Devonshire in 502.

Raziel secured the approval of the Keeper to fill the vacant leadership over the isle in a political coup that elevated him from Baron Dragon Lake to Duke Regent of Mists. An imperial decision by the Emperor declared that Solomon, born in May 502, the marquis of Mists and set to inherit his birthright upon his age of majority. The infant was raised as the natural issue of the Duke and Duchess Regent but retained close ties to his paternal family, doted upon by his aunt Laraine. He would never come to know his mother; she died after his first birthday trying to aid against the fires raging across Gateway during the Convergence in 503.

In October 505, Empress Mena confirmed Raziel Devonshire's ascension to the Duke of Mists for his services to the Empire and the state. In doing so, she declared:

"It is with this in mind that on this day, We grant to you the position of Duke Mists. Lord Solomon Karaganinas shall remain your heir and take on the mantle of Duke in his own right at your death, or retirement, whichever might come first. The line of Mists shall continue with the Marquis's heirs after that. The Emperor sends his congratulations on your new appointment, Duke Raziel Devonshire."

Tidbits

  • Raziel's regency over Mists began in late 501, replacing Lazarus. His term as regent for Solomon lasted from 502 to 505.
  • The vacancy in the barony of Dragon Lake, created by Raziel Devonshire's lack of siblings and heirs of his body, passed on to Solomon's adopted sister Nina Snicket in a decree on 22 July 505.
  • The High Council transferred custody from Raziel Devonshire to Drake Ravensford in July 507 after the announcement of betrothal between Duke Mists and Addison Brandivere.
