| Background |
- R.V.M. Dimitriades comes from the barony of Moonshadow on the Isle of Mists, though just which lordship he hails from, most people have forgotten and few bother to ask. He's made Polaris Point his home for the last forty years, beginner, journeyman, master mage, and finally, three years ago, high mage. Coming from a family of modest means, his parents despaired of him when he, determined to master what he saw as the greatest challenge, chose Transportation as his sphere, that ever-so-expensive, ever-so-tiring occupation. Just where he came by the money to do it, few remember, though rumors have circulated among young beginners and apprentices at the Academy of some wealthy lady love -- a noblewoman, perhaps? -- whose attentions he's spurned for near half a century, but who lavishes money on him all the same.
- Some mages leave the Academy as journeymen or masters. Some expand into other spheres, broadening the scope of their magic. Dimitriades never did. With single-minded focus on learning the unlearnable -- or, rather, the as-of-yet unlearned -- he's turned his mind these last thirty years to the deeper study of the arcane folds of transportation magic.
- An academic by nature and inclination, he has been popular among the younger students for a sense of humor and wit as quick as the temper he's known for: many a beginner mage has suffered a bruised schnoz on account of just how quickly his office door can shut on a failure.
- Some say he's come to Gateway to play the political game and invest in the right capital to win the coveted position of Omnia Viator, as soon as he's shipped his predecessor on a slow boat to Tolek. Others, that a later-in-life crisis has hit and he's been bit by the wanderlust bug. Most, that he's meticulously preparing for a dangerous experiment more likely to kill him than succeed. And some still yet whisper that his lady love has gone to Gateway and so, as the love-lost must, he follows.
