For as long as Renata can remember, she has been interested in learning anything and everything about anything and everything. As a child, she charted stars with her stubby young hands wrapped around thick wax crayons. A year or two later, she began mixing "potions" out of whatever she could find. Given that both of her parents were professors at the College of Science, she could quite often find some -interesting- things to mix. Luckily, no one died or was permanantly damaged as a result of these experiences, and when she was old enough to deftly handle a screwdriver, she moved on to trying to build things no one had ever thought of before.

At the age of ten, she decided she wanted to attend the College of Healing, so she began to study for the entrance exam and then enrolled around her eleventh birthday. She stayed at the college for about six months, quitting when she grew bored. She realized that no matter how interesting the subject matter was, she wasn't really interested in healing people. Right around this time, her mother died of sickness.

After a brief mourning period, Renata secured a research assistant position with one of her mother's former colleagues. This started a pattern where she would work on a project at the College of Science until it was over or she decided that she was done with it. When she was between projects, she would travel all over Draught with whichever of her cousins felt like traveling, learning and experiencing things in ways that had little to do with the lab. During her travels, she made a point to visit different libraries and read as much as she could in as many different subjects as she can.

About a year before she came to Gateway, her father was ennobled, placed in charge of Pyria in Miller's Isle. Renata enjoys some of the privileges of nobility, such as a higher income, but she resents the more severe restrictions that have been placed on her. After doing exactly as she has liked since she was eleven, the overprotective attentions of her brother and other well-intentioned individuals grate on her. She has since resigned herself to the inevitability of her fraternally induced fate, though he himself abandoned it soon before his death.

Renata is intelligent and mechanically inclined. She does her best to make wise decisions, though she is not always successful in this endeavor. She does have a temper, quick to rise and then once again to die, but she has much improved in controlling it. She prefers informality where ever possible, and she still finds it strange that people bow to her. She'd rather avoid the situations where such things are necessary, but she realizes that such things are not always possible, and that formal manners often serve to make others more comfortable. She is very nearly always friendly, and she is willing to talk to almost anyone, with the one very large exception of those who have proven themselves to be stupid.

Her future is still uncertain, and she still has constant doubts about what she wants to do with herself. She has come to the conclusion that it is likely her future will always be uncertain.

Though she is naturally inquisitive, she is doing her best to remember that not only did curiosity kill the cat, but it killed her father, two of her brothers, and left her remaining brother permanently scarred.

• She has taken up playing the flute, but will generally not play in any formal setting.
