World Map - under heavy construction
In the year 334, an assassination of the reigning emperor Cassius left his son Sebastian the title and the power to become the next Keeper. In response to the attack from Tyr, the new Emperor stepped to his balcony and, in his grief, raised the barrier that would shut his land and people off from the danger of the outside world. To his call, the currents answered, writhing and twisting in the birth of a powerful shield that encased and surrounded all of the Gateway empire and thus was the Barrier created.
This Barrier remained a solid defense of the Empire until December 501, when Emperor Rourke lifted a portion in response to a food shortage upon Green Fields Isle to allow an expeditionary group to see what lay beyond. In this time of first contact several countries were re-discovered, Tyr, Pais de Leuvier, Illyria, Maehdros, Aquilarco, Khelek and Tolek to name but a few and doubtless many other countries exist in the newly opened up world of Ikol.
Travel outside of the Barrier still remains controlled for security reasons but there is now a growing atmosphere of trade and external relations that has many watching to see what will come to be. In a much larger world, Gateway is maintaining a neutral observer status.

Crossing the Barrier
|
|
Here is a sample of a barrier crossing in log format, as a reference for those who might have made the crossing. It is from the inside to the outside, but the idea is still clear.
For information on the time it takes to travel to these nations, see Travel Times.

Outer Barrier development is always under construction and is a work in constant progress. Please keep this in mind when looking through the information.

Faction Note
|
|
In order to preserve the prestige and status of Gateway, no new country will exactly mimic the influences over the major theme of each duchy. Therefore, the Roman and Celtic Britain feel of Guardians or the way a magic-specific society has grown up on Mists should not be duplicated in a foreign area.
Each country in the Outer Barrier is a unique entity separate from other places; there are not two French-inspired cultures, for example. Please make sure that something unique sets your proposed nation apart, and if you need ideas, the Outer Barrier faction is happy to help.
Several country slots on the regional map here are under development by the Outer Barrier faction, and there may be other cultures which are not visibly represented because they are incomplete. Please contact Gwyndolen on the game as the Outer Barrier faction head to discuss new nations before submitting them, as certain ideas may already be tentatively incorporated into the game or very similar.

Ambassador Information
|
|
Ambassador roles will be opened as a means of introducing characters from other lands. In order to play an Ambassador from a place not listed above, you must have your country written up and approved (see +news Foreigners). If you apply to play an ambassador from an already-established country, you should become familiar with any prior IC history. An application should be sent to staff for approval before the character will be allowed to enter the grid.
Ambassadors and their retinues will be housed in a special area created just for these visitors to Gateway. Ambassadors should be prepared to generate RP by their arrival, and be prepared to have something they are offering Gateway and seeking from it in return. This can be to the Emperor or to the separate duchies, factions and guilds.
- Note: Only one Outer Barrier character is allowed per person. Outer Barrier applications are open.
- The only applications that will be considered are for ambassadors on official business.

Established Facts
|
- Any ships that first arrive within the Empire must first stop at Sentinel Spire to undergo inspection before carrying on to Gateway once approved.
- The only people currently approved to disembark from ships at Gateway are ambassadorial contingents of limited and pre-approved numbers (approved during their inspection at Sentinel Spire - players should @mail Guardian faction heads to this effect) and anyone with express permission of the Emperor. A ship can dock however and have someone on it relay a message requesting permission to land.
- Those who do not have permission to disembark have the option of sailing on to Gateway to the port at Whitecliff where another harbour is being built and is far nearer than returning to Sentinel Spire on Guardians Isle.
- Ambassadors are welcome to reside at the Embassy and as per IC warnings given to Emperor Rourke, likely will be met there for a few days before being invited anywhere in the castle -- a security measure that was instigated after an assassination attempt in the past. Foreigners are only allowed in the first floor of the castle unless specifically invited to a Tower or to the salon. (see +news castle perms)
- Outer Barrier Countries can and certainly do "visit" each other, but be sure to contact the head of that country before you go as per +news Faction RP
- Please contact the Outer Barrier faction if you have further questions.

Ikol Triangle
|
|
Outside of the Barrier there is a region beyond which ships that sail too far north tend will occasionally disappear. Talk might lend that such disappearances may be due to raiders -- though not Maehdrosi -- and such disappearances have been happening for a very long time.
It is rather like the Bermuda Triangle in this respect. Ships that are heavily guarded with an envoy would be far less likely to disappear -- or so history has shown so far at least. Any markers placed to warn travelers tend to disappear just as vessels might, though there may be a few maps present that have a line marked upon them as at least an approximation of where seems unsafe to travel beyond.
