In the Beginning
Marek Alexi Paggion was born the second son of a madman. Of course, he didn't know this until he was older. His father, Gaius Paggion, was the younger brother of Baron Jarl Paggion and — though his wife Tiadora attempted to be a calming influence — the man always seemed to covet what he didn't have. While young, Marek was forced to fight for attention from his father who never seemed to have enough for all four siblings. His father turned him to mastering more martial pursuits than the works of merchants and that set him to practice horseback riding at a very tender age. He was happy that his skills were advancing and even began to hope that his father would begin to notice him over his other siblings.
That, though, was not to be.
Instead of noticing Marek or any of his siblings, his father descended further into madness. The small fortune the family was whittled away and eventually the servants and tutors were sent away, leaving the family on their own. Gaius ruled his household with an iron hand and took out his frustrations on the family with increasing regularity. Marek took to being away whenever he could and continued to practice his skills alone even after the tutors were gone.
The death of his Uncle Jarl continued to worsen life for the young boy. When his father forced his family to shut out all communication entirely with their cousins, Marek finally came to the realization that Gaius was no longer a man he could trust. While this epiphany threatened to destroy him, he refused to let it. He instead persevered by drawing closer to his siblings and trying to reform the bonds of family that his father had done his best to break down.
When his elder brother left the house at the age of 16, Marek was only 12. Gaius took to trying to train the young boy personally as the leader of the house, as the new heir to his fallen estate. His father did his best to poison Marek further against his elder brother, and it was only his mother's and sister's influence that prevented this from happening. His father did, however, impart a sense of responsibility to take care of the family. At the age of thirteen, he began to practice with a bow and took to protecting the small plot of land the family had from being overrun by wild animals.
By fifteen, Marek had spent years training with a bow, spear, and sword. He took whatever training he could get, often from passing mercenaries or guards that he would hunt for as they crossed his families property. He was out looking for work when his elder sister and his father had the confrontation that lead to the lashing that nearly crippled her. Marek was furious, and it was only by the slightest margin that he decided to write his elder brother rather than confronting his father himself. When Willem returned home, confrontation between the siblings and their father involved a terrible accident that no one spoke of afterward. Gaius’s passing was not overly mourned.
Path of the Warrior
After the accident and in talking with his siblings, Marek realized that his place was not at home. With his elder brother taking over the family estate and his elder sister sent to finish her schooling and restore the family honor, Marek decided to take to the road. Although his sister and mother both protested, his mind was made up. He had to find his own path to restore his family's good name.
The young man used the last of his savings he had managed to collect to buy a place for himself with a group of traveling mercenaries. Luckily, the group he took up with was a group that could be trusted. From the age of fifteen, he worked with the little group of scouts known as the Howling Wolves. They refined his training and showed him what they knew of the warrior's trade. By the age of seventeen, he had spent nearly two years in various campaigns, working for different nobles and guilds.
The life was good for him. It let him think for himself unlike when he had been under his father's control. He made friends and enemies as one always does in the course of such things. When the dust settled, however, the young man came away from the campaigns with more of the former than the latter. It was his third year of campaigning that gave him the scar over one eye, courtesy of a bandit ambush on a caravan he was helping to guard. By this time, he had risen in the ranks of the company far enough to become a sergeant. A natural with a spear, his superiors said that he had the potential to go far — so long as he curbed both his tongue and his temper when dealing with those of higher rank.
His payments he sent back to Willem and the family, keeping only what he needed to survive. He was seen as a bit overly serious because of this as he didn't take part in more of the activities that most of his friends favored. He planned on staying and slowly raising in rank in his company for some time, but things conspired against him. A few bad mistakes from the leader of the company caused the groups fortunes to plummet and eventually forced them to disband just as Marek turned nineteen. Each member was forced to find his own way, and Marek contacted his family to find out what news they had.
The news that his sister had moved to the central city took him by surprise, though he agreed it was a good idea. When he heard that Willem also was planning on moving there, he settled his affairs with his friends and took one last mission that would lead him to Crossroads as well, where he could keep an eye on his sister. Not that he doesn't trust Willem, but old habits die hard.
Lord of Gateway
On September 8, 507, the Keeper of the Isles, His Majesty Maximilian Rourke Thomas Sebation Caprios, raised Marek up as one of the first Lords of Gateway, and bestowed on him the added position of Imperial Venator, charged with handling Imperial matters all over the Empire.
Personality
Early on in his life, Marek decided that regardless of just what life threw at him he would do his very best to smile about it. He is at hears a very cheerful man, friendly and outgoing. It came as something of a surprise when he learned that about himself, but it was a welcome surprise. His smile is usually on his face and a laugh not far from his lips. He genuinely enjoys being around people and makes friends much easier than the rest of his family. Outgoing and gregarious the young man enjoys himself in crowds or in more intimate conversations. However he is surprisingly closemouthed on his own past and his own experiences. He thinks before he speaks most of the time, though sometimes he says things that aren't the smartest of things regardless. He has a very teasing nature and some might even call him prone to flirting as well. He can be driven and very serious when the time calls for it, though he usually prefers to be his normal relatively carefree self.
His time on Gateway has changed him a bit, and not always for the better. He trusts less easily now, though his smiles still comes to his face just as often. Recent events has made him quite a bit more thoughtful though and less prone to simply speak his mind entirely out of hand. He can be fiercely loyal now to those that gain his respect and trust though, and to his family, his blood, and his Emperor. He is still especially protective of his big sister, from all people even including his big brother.
He is also a passionate man, though at times this can indeed get him into much too much trouble for his own good. Though not a Purist he tries his best to be honest, and to live by the word he gives to people. He has a deep respect for the Purist faith, even though he himself as no desire to be one. He also has a great love of working with his hands and the outside, and at times he has quite a soft heart. He takes excellent care of any animals he keeps, and it saddens him to spend so much of the time in the City and not enough of it outdoors and in the woods where he feels much more at home.
