Background

Born with not quite a silver spoon in his mouth, Gavan Ardal Locksley is the third child born to the lucrative Locksleys of Smithfield, Guardians. The family is well known for its ties with the merchant guild and its fantastic wealth gotten from ownership of several prodigious gem mines. Gavan grew up knowing that he had two things in store for him. Pressure to make money. Pressure to marry well. With that in mind, he's done his best to live life to its fullest. He's studied diverse topics, hunted, roamed, and climbed the mountains of his birth. All of this before his age of majority.

At the age of sixteen, his rebellious nature got him sent off to the Legions at an age many would call too young. Many assumed that he would once again prove untamable and depart at his first opportunity. They were wrong. Gavan spent three years with the Legions as a marine before mustering out into the Auxilliary. Rumor has it he made quite a few friends among the ribald crews. A more serious and experienced Gavan returned to the family business and set himself up within their shipping interests. He's since proven himself to be a savvy businessman and a cunning sailor. Word is that he's even dared a few forays beyond the Barrier, returning with much wealth to enhance the family coffers.

As someone close in line to inherit the family business, Gavan can often be found in Gateway assisting in the business and keeping a finger on the pulse of Gateway's merchantile interests.

The Finer Points

Gavan is an unpredictable sort and he likes it that way. If given the conventional option, he'll try the unexpected. If expected to do the unexpected, he'll do the conventional. Either way, life around him is never dull. One might get the impression that he does this to infuriate his family but his string of business successes keep his father silent for now. In any effect, he's never outright refused his parents.

Beginning with his youth, Gavan was overshadowed by his eldest brother, Greydon, with his charm, eloquence, and military service. His sister, Shayne, proved to be an genius in military intelligence. He did what he could to get attention but soon was lost to his younger siblings. So it was he decided to make his own path in life and to depend on no one. This, of course, coincided with the conclusion of his basic training and initial mandatory service with the duchy. He shocked the family by signing on with the Auxilliary Marines and asking his father if he could get involved with the family business. That was six years ago.

Since that moment, Gavan has used his often overlooked talents to build himself into a position of some notoriety, in a good way. He's braved the seas beyond the Barrier, returning with valuable commodities. He's proven himself a worthy ship captain. He's gathered a loyal crew. And last, but certainly not least, he's gotten himself back into his father's good graces due to the above.

The Public Image

In the merchant sector, Gavan has made a name for himself for a shrewd business acumen and an ability to read both the market and his 'opponent' in a sale. He's remarkably hard to pin down as to what he's going to be selling or trading for from day to day and more than a few men have followed his lead to make a small fortune. Albeit smaller than he for his was the first sale.

In the marines, Gavan's initial arrival was much like any other commoner from a well to do family.. not terribly special. That all changed with his decision to serve a three year commitment. In those three years, he pushed himself harder than many men who would go on to be career military and soon he proved an able shot with the bow, a deft hand at short blades, and an avid wrestler. Most importantly, he found a love for the sea which he's carried with him ever since. Nearly every member of his ship's crew is a member of the Auxilliary and they do their best to serve on the same vessel during their yearly service. He holds the rank of Centurion Primus. Rumor has it that spends his idle time upon the sea reading.

The Diadem of the Sea is his personal vessel. Funded through years of successful business, his vessel is one of the finest available to a non-noble and the envy of some nobles. As mentioned before, the vast majority of his 300 crew are Auxilliary Marines by design. All of them are men he has served with or commanded.

Rumor has it that he's spent an extensive amount of time in the Green Fields tower as a guest of Their Graces, has friends among the nobility, and has had numerous audiences with the Empress. What this all means is anyone's guess but with his sister, Shayne, due to become Duchess Guardian, he is certainly not without his connections.
