You can play Crossroads MUSH for free. We'll never charge money for playing, or provide any special benefits to anyone who contributes money.

That said, there are a few expenses for running the game. We have to pay our host, MUSHpark, and we occasionally purchase advertising space on various MUD/MUSH listing sites to attract new players.
