[edit] Dioptase Montaigu, Lord Midnight Lagoon

A man of few words and groomed with all the sublime social niceties of his family, Dioptase is every inch a man of nobility. Brimming with quiet and sure pride over his station in life, he has never been the sort to fuss over his own failings or worry too much about things that are simply out of his control. Stress is simply not in this man's vocabulary. Dioptase Montaigu is "poured caramel", as one person was noted to say.

He has stood as Lord since the disappearance of his mother, and served it faithfully without major upheaval or argument with any of his many lieges over the years. A faithful and modest man, any who take two glances between he and his family can surely see that while his nephew took on the high energy of his father, Dioptase and his even keel personality and unwavering warmth (even with a touch of distance) has found his second eldest niece, Lazuli, most like himself.

Slow to anger and easy to smile, there is still something that hums beneath the surface of well groomed sophistication. An energy that gives him an aura of absolute power that comes to all men who are firmly in control of their faculties and are aware of how far they reach. Modesty is the saving grace that keeps him from spinning out of control, in Dioptase's eyes, his station as a Lord in a long and proud family line is something that he can only count as a blessing and be truly grateful for. The power does not belong to him as much as it belongs to Mists, with him as its conduit. It is something never to be abused, used for personal gain or taken for granted, no exceptions. This leads him into easy disapproval for those who may see a title as an easy way to line their pockets or gain quick prestige, he also tends to think those who believe their name grants them the right to rule are less than worthy.

What can one expect from a man that watched over a land where the sole function was constant striving for betterment and challenging ones self?

It is without a doubt an oddity that while he has been betrothed twice, in his sixties, he has never once married, and never provided an heir for the seat he obviously treasures. For whatever the reason, be it that he was simply overlooked for enough years on his quiet mountain top, or that perhaps he had struck a deal with his liege many years ago, or even that he had a rebellious streak as a young man, whatever the case may be, it has become clear that at this point, his brother, Carnelian holds the title of Heir and shall shoulder the responsibility of continuing the line. To this ends, Dioptase made certain each of his brother's children received the proper training and education an heir to the Lordship would need.

In private, he is a gregarious man, still of few words, but quite notably warm and giving of himself. Passionate in his quiet ways, he enjoys the fine arts and has a soulfulness to him that those closest to him have undoubtedly been privy to.

[edit] Montaigu Family

The Montaigu family is one of the few ancient bloodlines of Mists which still remain. After the Schism and the Great Ritual, many of them had died out, and while Montaigu was not without its scares or losses, they have remained present as faithful Sons and Daughters of Mists.

In the past, they had held the reclusive lands of Sorcery's Crest proudly, regardless of the essential uselessness of the land as far as raw materials and exports, considering it a righteous duty and burden they would proudly shoulder. They have been considered some of the warmest and genuine of people, even in a place as infamous as Moonshadow and the surrounding lands that many may consider more dubious in nature. While they are notoriously warm hosts, there are whispers about the family's obscure superstitions and bizarre mannerisms that each seem to exhibit in their own unique manner of individuality, but none that seem to tarry toward the realm of dubious in nature like some of the other ancient bloodlines.

There is a certain amount of pride, honor, duty and higher standard that many of the Montaigu family are said to hold themselves to, as is to be expected from the family who held the Dueling Pavilion for so many centuries.

In early 509, after a prompting from the Emperor, the Montaigus resigned their place as judges of the pavilion to serve in the capital on a more permanent political presence. It was agreed that while the Lord would no longer be the Judge, a Montaigu would always be present on the panel as they passed the magical duty to their rivals, former lords of the Crest and their in-laws; the Tremayne family.

In the recent history, this proud family has been 'gifted' with a new Lordship, with bountiful resources and prospects compared to their lonely mountain. There is some sad reluctance about leaving their home, there were no loud complaints, only solemn understanding and some quiet pride as Sorcery's Crest was dissolved into the Ducal Holding and remains a place of higher magic and prestige.

Now, as Lords of the combined lordship of Midnight Lagoon and the former Banshee's Shriek, the Montaigus' look forward to a promising horizon of new possibilities on this new and old Isle of Mists.
