Brandon grew up as the only child of a skilled bowyer and a mentally ill mother. His father taught the boy how to craft a good bow and prepared him for one day taking over the business by teaching him how to read and write and do math. Brandon never saw much to his mother, as she since his birth had pulled more and more into herself because of her mental illness. He brought her food a few times each day, but she were never prepared to speak much. Brandon's father died from pneumonia when Brandon were 21 years old.

He then found himself alone with managing the store and taking care of his mother.

An even greater change happened to his life in march 505 when Delita Lytton appointed him heir to knife's edge. A messenger simply arrived at the door along with a private teacher and a guard and handed Brandon the news in the form of a letter with Lady Lyttons seal. The teacher and the guard stayed, and being too stunned by the news, Brandon never had the thought to refuse. The teacher started teaching him the things he would be required to know when he became a lord, while the guard began practicing melee fighting with the new heir. Being quite able with a bow already, that part of the training was skipped as the guard had to see him beaten by Brandons skillful use of his bow.

In march 506 Delita Lytton died (Brandon had only met her a few times) and Brandon became the new lord much faster than he had hoped for. The following year went with trying to find heads and tail of everything and Brandon put all his time into trying to become the lord he was supposed to be. In March 507, he arrived at Gateway.
