Bane Arx
From Crossroads Wiki
Put more trust in nobility of character than in an oath. -Solon
Born the middle child of three sons in a family that had no claim to nobility despite its deep footholds in the world of Guardian's economy, Bane Arx was never raised with any political foresight whatsoever. By the time the family had gathered enough political contacts, tangible wealth and attention in the region of Soaring Skies to ascend to its Lordship in the months following the first Conway-Barca conflict there were no other choices for the seat but Bane, who took it grudgingly and out of necessity alone: his eldest brother Coel had his hands too deeply into the family business to extricate himself easily and his younger brother, Grigor, lacked the temperament and capacity to fairly and patiently attend to civil matters.
A youth spent learning and then instructing in the equestrian arts and mounted combat gave way to an entirely different lifestyle, not at times without regret, and although Bane is viewed as an unquestionably fair and trustworthy man, he's also known to have a Guardian's temper of the first degree and it's rare that people dare to try his patience, as it's known his displeasure cannot be relied upon to be all bark and no bite. Knowing this, he's done a fair job of surrounding himself with a group of people on whom he can rely to see to the smaller matters involved in governing the region of Guardian dedicated to the breeding and training of horses for war, as well as the education of its cavalry. Not a man afraid of either hard work or danger, he's made a habit of traveling within the boundaries of his lordship at least once year on horseback to discuss matters with community leaders elsewhere, though his son will say that he thinks it's as much a reason for him to get away from petitioners and sit a horse as it is anything else. There are stories about the retinue being beset by bandits and the lack of mercy displayed by the Lord of Soaring Skies that credit his reputation for being a monster in a fight.
He does not bother to craft any illusions about the nature of his marriage. Having secured his seat in the marrying of the former lordship's daughter -- following the disgrace of the lord and the passing of his wife -- there is apparently no love lost between man and wife, though the woman is provided with all she might want for and is said to have no complaints about the nature of her arrangement. If Bane sees to his private needs elsewhere, he does so quietly and with enough discretion that not even his children are aware of it...though presumably he must, as the young wife he's taken has produced no further heirs in the few years since their marriage.
He is fiercely devoted to his children -- if perhaps more strict than any of them would like -- and dotes obviously on the youngest, Nora.
