The Great Schism of 508
Defined by the drastic devastation to Crossroads City, and subsequently on other isles, it has been termed the Great Schism.
Event Description
Later revealed to be the result of a number of people attempting to destroy the Gateway, the night of October 22 was known as a time when earthquakes shook Crossroads City, buildings and people were cut in half by the Currents, and fires broke out a number of places in the city. The mages of the empire all were hit with abrupt and crippling pain, and the Breath of Imperius stopped. Tidal waves hit the shores of Guardian and later Green Fields. The magnitude of the tragedy is still being discerned.
Gateway Effects
Gateway itself suffered severe shaking of an earthquake that dramatically impacted the village. A chaotic atmosphere prevails as people try to take stock of the damage.
  • Tremors centered on the castle and ripped through the Keeper North and west Plazas, causing widespread property loss and injuries.
  • The Toy Shop collapsed completely.
  • The Grimoire Magic Shop seemed as if it was literally sliced in two.
  • The top floor of the Clothing Shop had fallen in upon itself.
  • Fires spread out from the Ocean View restaurant kitchen, and several buildings fell into a pit in the Keeper North including the Book Shop.
  • Animals from the faire run uncontrolled through the city.
  • After the loss of land on Draught, major flooding occurred within the northern part of the city, waterlogging the already damaged areas of Keeper North, and Keeper West.
Mists Effects
Much of the upheaval on Mists settled by morning, though the lasting effects of the absent Breath of Imperius continues to frighten the populace.

  • Low-lying areas, especially harbours, experienced flooding.
  • The Breath of Imperius ceased.
Guardian Effects
The upheaval on Guardian was delayed, occurred six or seven hours after the schism in Gateway -- occurred, in fact, the morning of a great hunt to kick off the Battle of the Beasts.
  • Gwencalon: The quays, shipping district, and several slums of Gwencalon were flooded, with most of the ships docked there destroyed on the rocks or the cliffs. Shadowy creatures, some say demons, attacked the Duke and his hunting party.
  • Sentinel Spire: A dozen or more weresharks attack the city. Several dozen deaths and injuries reported.
  • Trebachas: Reports are received of the swamps swallowing entire villages in Fen March and Whispering Reeds, as well as monsters who emerged to kill more. A cohort sent into the swamps to aid survivors is lost, never to be heard from again. Deaths number in the tens of thousands, and all survivors are evacuated to the northern half of the barony. The southern tribes are entirely wiped out, save a handful of survivors who find refuge with the tribes of Tel Girade.
Green Fields Effects
The low-lying, fertile lands of the Golden Crescent region, ripe for harvest, flooded. Now there is panic about how to keep the crops from spoiling and harvest from being pitifully meager.

Word also started being spread of the impending failure of magical wards on storehouses that will cause spoilage to foods normally kept fresh year round.

Draught Effects
Two days after the Event upon Gateway, a large portion of the southern coastline of Draught experiences a great earthquake and falls into the Sea of Veils, including Port Omenal, the main port city of all of Draught, rendering aid to the isle most difficult. Just less than half of the Barony of Ethos was also lost, though the baronial seat and the city of Grace remain (mostly) standing. The death toll is large, upwards of fifty five thousand people.

Inter-island Effects
  • The currents throughout the Isles were badly interrupted on October 22. They stopped completely.
  • Ships mid-current were left to drift. Several sank after they snapped like toys.
  • Currents resumed normal operation on the morning of October 23.
Mages and the Mists
The life-giving Breath of Imperius on Mists halted altogether. Though it has ceased sporadically in the past, most recently in 507, any interruption causes panic and immediate illness or death. Mages can survive only two months without an infusion of the Breath to halt deleterious effects, and they do not have a replenishment source.
